DATA AVAILABLE FOR THE SIMULATION:

1. DISCUSSION OF DATA FILES AND RUN PARAMETERS

The following seventeen input data files are required for each simulation run. Each file has been constructed to be appropriate for the rates of birth, death, and migration of European populations, 1850-1920.

  • Rural Population. The Rural Population, by age and sex. The total population is taken to be 100.0 females and a slightly smaller number of males.
  • Urban Population. The Urban Population, by age and sex. The total population is taken to be 33.0 females and a slightly smaller number of males.
  • Rural Fertility. The number of female children born each year in the Rural population to women in each five-year group from ages 15 to 49. Male births are assumed to be 1.03 times female births.
  • Urban Fertility. The number of female children born each year to women in the Urban population. Otherwise as indicated above.
  • Urban Settlers Fertility. The number of female children born each year to women in the Urban Settlers population.
  • Abroad Settlers Fertility. The number of female children born each year to women in the Abroad Settlers population.
  • Home Voyagers Fertility. The number of female children born to women in the captive population of Home Voyagers during the year of their voyage from the Rural to the Urban Settlers populations.
  • Abroad Voyagers Fertility. The number of female children born to women in the captive population of Abroad Voyagers during the year of their voyage from Europe to joining the Settlers Abroad population.
  • Rural Survival. Rural survival rates, by age and sex.
  • Urban Survival. Urban survival rates, by age and sex.
  • Urban Settlers Survival. Urban Settlers survival rates, by age and sex.
  • Abroad Settlers Survival. Abroad Settlers survival rates, by age and sex.
  • Home Voyagers Survival. Survival rates of voyagers, by age and sex, during the year of their voyage from the Rural population to their joining the Urban Settlers population or their boarding Atlantic ships.
  • Abroad Voyagers Survival. Survival rates of voyagers, by age and sex, during the year of their voyage from Europe to joining the Abroad Settlers population.
  • Departure Size. The proportion of persons departing from the Source population, for each age and sex group.
  • Partition. The proportion of voyagers, for each age and sex group, that crosses the Atlantic to become Abroad Settlers. The remainder remains in Europe to become Urban Settlers.

In addition to these seventeen data files included in every simulation, there is one Run Parameter set for each simulation.

  • NumberPeriods. As a default, the simulation runs for eight periods of five years, for a total of 40 years. You can modify it to as few as one period (five years) or as many as thirteen periods (65 years).
