- Abroad Settlers
- Those who settle Abroad after migration from Rural areas. (European simulation)
- Abroad Settlers Fertility
- The number of female children born each year to women in the Abroad Settlers population. (European simulation)
- Abroad Settlers Survival
- Abroad Settlers survival rates, by age and sex. (European simulation)
- Abroad Voyagers Fertility
- The number of female children born to women in the captive population of Abroad Voyagers during the year of their voyage from Europe to joining the Settlers Abroad population. (European simulation)
- Abroad Voyagers Survival
- Survival rates of voyagers, by age and sex, during the year of their voyage from Europe to joining the Abroad Settlers population. (European simulation)
- Births
- Number of male and female births in a population in a five-year period.
- CBR
- Crude birth rate per year (births divided by midpoint population), calculated for the last five-year period.
- CDR
- Crude death rate per year (deaths divided by midpoint population), calculated for the
last five-year period.
- CGR
- Crude growth rate (births. (See LRCGR))
- CnBR
- Crude net birth rate per year (births divided by midpoint population, accounting for
in- and out-migration), calculated for the last five-year period.
- CnDR
- Crude net death rate per year (deaths divided by midpoint population, accounting
for in- and out-migration), calculated for the last five-year period.
- CRND
- Crude rate of net decrement per year (deaths plus out-migrants, divided by
midpoint population), calculated for the last five-year period.
- CRNI
- Crude rate of natural increase per year (births less deaths, divided by midpoint
population).
- CRNM
- Crude rate of net migration per year (in-migrants less out-migrants, divided by
midpoint population), calculated for the last five-year period..
- CRnNI
- Crude rate of net natural increase per year (births less deaths, divided by midpoint
population, accounting for in- and out-migration).
- Captive Abroad Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for Captives abroad.
- Captive African Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for Captives in Africa.
- Captives
- Persons taken by capture from the Source population, in the year of their
existence until they become Domestics, Exports, or die.
- Captors Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for Captors.
- Captors File (Population)
- Data file: initial population for Captors.
- Captors Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for Captors.
- Capture Size File
- Data file: proportions of Source population captured, by age and sex.
- CaptureInterval
- Run parameter: "1" means capture takes place every year; "2" means
capture takes place in the first five-year period but not in the second five-year period, etc.
- Current population
- Calculated population: population in the current period, by age and
sex.
- Criterion Variables
- Variables selected as indicating overall impact of slave trade on
African population. See Export Ratio, Growth Rate, and Sex Ratio.
- Deaths
- Number of deaths in a population in a five-year period.
- Departure Size
- The proportion of persons departing from the Source population, for each age and sex group. (European simulation)
- Domestic Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for Domestics.
- Domestic Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for Domestics.
- Expectation of life at birth
- Same as average age at death - reflected in the proportion of old to young persons. It is very close to the average age of persons living.
- Export Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for Exports.
- Export Ratio
- Criterion Variable: New Exports as a fraction of current Regional
population.
- Export Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for Exports.
- GroupPop
- Population of any group, by age and sex.
- Growth Rate
- Average annual growth rate of Regional population.
- Home populations
- Two home populations are assumed, Home 1 and Home 2. Each population has its birth and death rates, by age and sex. (Basic model)
- Home Voyagers Fertility
- The number of female children born to women in the captive population of Home Voyagers during the year of their voyage from the Rural to the Urban Settlers populations.
- Home Voyagers Survival
- Survival rates of voyagers, by age and sex, during the year of their voyage from the Rural population to their joining the Urban Settlers population or their boarding Atlantic ships. (Basic model)
- Initial population
- Population of Source and Captor groups at the beginning of the
simulation.
- In-migrants
- Persons entering a population other than by birth during a five-year period.
- LRCGR
- Crude birth rate, calculated over the full period of the simulation. (See CGR)
- Mid-Period Pop
- Calculated population: the population of a group in the middle of a five-
year period.

- Migration
- Migration, for humans, is the movement of individuals from one place to another and from one population to another. (Basic model)
- Net Births
- Births in a population in a five-year period, accounting for births to in-
migrants and out-migrants.
- Net Deaths
- Deaths in a population in a five-year period, account for deaths among in-
migrants and out-migrants.
- Net Mid-Period Pop
- Estimated population of a group in the middle of a five-year
period.
- New Abroad Export Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for New Abroad Exports.
- New Africa Export Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for New Africa Exports.
- New Domestics Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for New Domestics.
- NumberPeriods
- Run parameter. The number of five-year periods for which the
simulation runs. Default is 8 periods, or 40 years.
- Out-migrants
- Persons leaving a population other than by death during a five-year period.
- OutputInterval
- Run parameter. The interval at which simulation output is printed.
Default is 8 periods (40 years). If you set the output interval at 4, the simulation will print output after 4 periods (20 years) and again at 8 periods (40 years), etc.
- Partition
- The proportion of voyagers, for each age and sex group, that crosses the Atlantic to become Abroad Settlers. The remainder remains in Europe to become Urban Settlers.
- Partition File
- Data file. The proportion of Captives (by age and sex) retained as slaves in
Africa; the remainder of Captives are sent to become Exports.
- Population pyramid
- Population pyramids show the size, age and sex distribution of populations. They show a census of the population at a moment in time.
- Regional Population
- The total estimated African population during a five-year period,
calculated as the total of Source, Captor and Domestic populations.
- Return migration
- Selection of migrants from Homeland Settlers or Abroad Settlers to return to their Home population.
- Rural Fertility
- The number of female children born each year in the Rural population to women in each five-year group from ages 15 to 49. Male births are assumed to be 1.03 times female births.
- Rural Population
- The Rural population, by age and sex. The total population is taken to be 100.0 females and a slightly smaller number of males. (European simulation)
- Rural Survival
- Rural survival rates, by age and sex. (European simulation)
- Secondary migration
- Selection of migrants from Homeland Settlers or Abroad Settlers to migrate further - either changing location or changing status. (Basic model)
- Settler populations
- Two settler populations, Home 2 Settlers and Abroad Settlers, are created through the migration of individuals from the Home 1 population. (Basic model)
- Sex Ratio
- Criterion Variable: Males 20-59 as a fraction of females 15-44 in Slave
Society.
- Slave Society
- Population: the total of Captors and Domestics at any time -- the African
slave owners, their families and their slaves.
- Source Fert File
- Data file: fertility rates for the Source population.
- Source File (Population)
- Data file: initial population for Sources.
- Source Surv File
- Data file: survival rates for the Source population.
- Stable population
- Calculated population: the population of the Source and Captor
populations that would have existed if there were only normal births and deaths, and no capture or other migration.
- Stage 1 of transit, within homeland

- Stage 2 of transit, abroad

- Standardized adult sex ratio
- Males 20-59 as a fraction of females 15-44. A measure of the
ratio of marriageable males to marrigeable females, standardized to equal 1.0 in the initial Source and Captor populations.
- Urban Fertility
- The number of female children born each year to women in the Urban population. Otherwise as indicated above. (European simulation)
- Urban Population
- The Urban Population, by age and sex. The total population is taken to be 33.0 females and a slightly smaller number of males. (European simulation)
- Urban Settlers
- Those who settle in Urban areas of homeland after migration from Rural areas. (European simulation)
- Urban Settlers Fertility
- The number of female children born each year to women in the Urban Settlers population. (European simulation)
- Urban Settlers Survival
- Urban Settlers survival rates, by age and sex. (European simulation)
- Urban Survival
- Urban survival rates, by age and sex. (European simulation)
